I have been
in the fine art business for 25 years. In the mid 1970's I opened
the Marc II Gallery in Los Angeles, featuring fine arts and antiques
from India, Southeast Asia and the Far East. Areas of particular
interest were Indonesian tribal art and textiles, Himalayan art,
Indian medieval sculpture and early Chinese ceramics. The gallery
became the largest of its kind on the West Coast. In the late
80's I turned my attention to contemporary art and I began to
work with living artists.
The Marc Richards
Gallery of Contemporary Art opened in 1989 representing Los Angeles
artists John Millei, Mary Corse and Meg Cranston, among others.
From 1989 until 1993 the gallery curated a number of important
group exhibitions, including the L.A. based Light and Space Movement,
and "Hard Edge", an exhibition of Geometric Abstract painters.
In 1993 I closed the gallery and moved to New York City from where
I began to advise a number of collectors on the secondary art
market, specializing in Pop and Minimal Art, The works of Judd,
Warhol, Flavin, Mangold, Ruscha, and Richter where regularly bought
and sold. A news letter was published to inform clients on the
movements in the art markets and at auction. In 1997 I returned
to Los Angeles, and began traveling again to Asia. I have chosen
to specialize in early Chinese ceramics and bronzes. I travel
extensively to Asia in order to keep current with market conditions
and to secure special pieces for my clients. I currently deal,
by appointment only, from a gallery space in Los Angeles. marcrichards.com
is the beginning of a larger vision to expand my commercial art
interests and audience in a way not feasible with a physical art
gallery. I intend in the weeks and months ahead to introduce other
areas of fine art to my online audience. |
